Oil Pulling- Is It Worth The Hype?
Oil pulling comes from Ayurvedic Medicine- traditional from India. Basically, when you wake up in the morning you put some oil (olive, sunflower, sesame seed, or coconut oil) in your mouth and swish it around for 15-20 minutes. Then you spit it out. They say that the act of moving the oil around your mouth for that length of time would absorb the toxins and bacteria from your mouth. When you spit out the oil, it should be a different consistency, you’re spitting out the toxins. Does it actually work? People are claiming that it not only will whiten your teeth and make your mouth healthier, but that it will improve your digestion, cure a hangover, clear up your eczema, help you sleep better, and maybe even alleviate pain. Sounds too good to be true. It is, and it isn’t. The oil swishing around in your mouth does work like a natural mouthwash. It actually is causing your mouth to be cleaner and healthier. However, the other benefits only exist because having a healthy mouth is essential to having a healthy body. Because your mouth is a gateway to your internal body, it’s important to maintain good oral hygiene. Bottom line: If oil pulling appeals to you, go for it. But it isn’t a substitute for normal practices of flossing and brushing.
